The Importance of Medicare Annual Wellness Visits: A Partnership with Humana

This post has been sponsored by Humana. All opinions are my own.

As we age, taking care of our health becomes increasingly important. That's why I’m excited to partner withHumana to help educate you about the significance of MedicareAnnual Wellness Visits and the role of primary care providers in maintaining your health.

My Health Journey

My journey from corporate America to winning Ms. Olympia was not just a physical transformation but a profound mental shift. I faced numerous challenges, but through Faith, Intuition, and Tenacity—the core principles of my “FIT”Methodology—I overcame them. Regular health checkups played a crucial role in my journey, and they are even more important as we age.

What is a Medicare Wellness Visit?

As I age, I’ve been educating myself on Medicare and its different offerings. Medicare, the federal health insurance program for individuals 65 and older, covers valuable preventive services. If you are new to Medicare, you will have an initial “Welcome to Medicare Visit” with your primary care physician. This visit is essential to creating a personalized plan to help maintain your health and prevent disease. After that, an annual wellness visit is covered. These visits are your ongoing maintenance checks with your doctor to keep you on track with preventive screenings and care.

Why Are Annual Wellness Visits Important?

Regular health checkups are an important part of maintaining your health and catching health issues early. When we reach ‘senior’ status, it is possible that we will have at least one chronic condition—about 80%of us may have two or more. It can be confusing if you need to seemultiple medical providers and take a variety of medications. Having a primary care doctor who knows you, your unique personal needs, and your risk factors is critical to ensuring you get right-sized support and resources along your health care journey. Studies show that seniors who spend time with their primary care providers experience fewer hospitalizations, fewer emergency room visits, more necessary preventive care screenings, and overall cost savings throughout the year on health care expenses.

Finding a Primary Care Provider

If you don’t have a primary care provider, reach out to your insurance carrier to connect you with doctors in your area that accept your plan. Understanding your covered visits, preventive care, and screenings can help you make informed decisions about your health care.
